Program
Meals on Wheels volunteers and Oshkosh Family Inc. staff combine regular meal delivery with in-depth support services. Meals are prepared at Evergreen Retirement Community and delivered between 11:00 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Persons eligible for meals must meet specific criteria including that they reside within the city limits of Oshkosh, be homebound, need assistance in preparing meals, are unable to be transported to a meal site, and/or have specialized dietary needs.
Diets
A wide range of special diets are available. Physicians are asked to list the specific diet necessary when making the referral.
Volunteers
Volunteers provide a daily contact for the recipient. Every noon meal is accompanied by the friendly face of a volunteer who visits briefly and leaves the meal. They get to know each other and look forward to the visit.
Volunteers will bring any concerns to the attention of coordinating staff who in turn insure that the recipient receives appropriate assistance.
Procedure
- 1. Request an application from Oshkosh Family Inc.
- 2. Complete the application and return it to Oshkosh Family Inc.
- 3. Emergency needs should be relayed by telephone. Arrangements can be made to have applications faxed, etc. An application must be completed and on file before service will start.
- 4. The application will be processed as soon as possible. Eligible applicants are served as space is available in a geographic area. Alternative program planning is provided where indicated.
Meals on Wheels is designed to supplement the recipient's nutritional needs by providing five main meals per week. The program should not be relied upon to meet total dietary needs.
The meal is packed in two foil trays providing a hot and cold portion of the meal. Each meal will contain a minimum of:
- 3 oz. protein: (lean meat/poultry/fish/cheese)
- 1/2 cup potato/rice/pasta
- 1/2 cup vegetable
- 1/2 cup salad
- 1/2 cup dessert
- 1 serving bread/rolls
- 1 tsp. margarine
Menus are planned by registered dietitians. There is a 3-week menu rotation. Substitutions of certain foods may be possible by contacting the Meals on Wheels Coordinator.
Charges
Recipients of Meals on Wheels pay only for the actual cost of the food preparation. Meals are delivered by volunteers who provide their own transportation and receive no reimbursement. Coordination and professional support services are provided by Oshkosh Family Inc., a member agency of the Oshkosh Area United Way.
Recipients are billed monthly for meals received the previous month. The recipient will be billed for meals canceled after 8:30 a.m. Contact the Meals on Wheels coordinator for the current meal cost. Persons on Medical Assistance or are low income may be eligible for a reduced cost. Please check with the Meals on Wheels office for more information.
